Grand Seiko, a renowned watchmaking brand with a strong portfolio of mechanical watches, has always been known for its innovative Spring Drive technology. However, in its 60-year history, the brand’s chronograph offerings were limited to calibers 9R86 and 9R96. That changes this year with the expansion of the Evolution 9 collection and the introduction of the first-ever mechanical chronograph, the Tentagraph SLGC001.
The Caliber 9SA5, as discussed in detail in our article on the successful White Birch, laid the foundation for the new Evolution 9 collection. Now, it has become the base for Grand Seiko’s first mechanical chronograph. The brand has a rich history and expertise in watchmaking, and the 9SA5’s technical prowess makes it an excellent choice for the Tentagraph SLGC001.
Introducing the Mechanical Chronograph Caliber 9SC5
Grand Seiko’s first mechanical chronograph movement, the Caliber 9SC5, features a classic tri-compax layout and date indication. The movement is based on the 9SA5, boasting a slim profile, double-barrel layout, and a 5Hz frequency. It has a 72-hour power reserve, Dual Impulse Escapement, a free-sprung balance, and an accuracy rating of +5 to -3 seconds per day. The movement’s design is visually appealing, and the chronograph module ensures precise control and smooth operation.
The Tentagraph SLGC001: A Modern Timepiece with Classic Design
The name “Tentagraph” comes from the watch’s specs: TEN beats per second, three days power reserve, and automatic chronoGRAPH. The watch houses the new caliber in a typical Grand Seiko style, with a slim, discreet, and classic design. The case is made of high-intensity titanium, and the lugs, brushing, and Zaratsu-polished bevel add to its modern appeal.
The Grand Seiko Tentagraph SLGC001 measures 43.2mm in diameter and 15.3mm in height. It is a sporty automatic chronograph with 100m water resistance, screw-down crown, and see-through crystal back. The black ceramic bezel has a mix of polished and brushed surfaces, adding depth and dynamism. The pushers are also appropriately sized, a departure from the previous Spring Drive chronographs.
The dial of the Tentagraph SLGC001 features a balanced and traditional layout, with 3-6-9 counters and a color-matched date at 4:30. The hands and markers are bold, detailed, and luminous, while the dial itself features a deep blue Mt. Iwate sunray-style pattern. The execution of the dial and hands is impeccable, as expected from Grand Seiko.
The watch is worn on a high-intensity titanium bracelet, featuring brushed surfaces and polished accents. The folding clasp has a push-button release, and a series of holes serve as a simplified micro-adjustment system.
The Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Tentagraph SLGC001 will be available in boutiques and selected retailers in June 2023, priced at 14,300€. For more details, please visit grand-seiko.com.
